We chose well when we decided to stay in the small town of Selcuk and to explore Ephesus from there. It is a small friendly town and not many tourists stay there, as most arrive by bus from Izmir where they stay on cruise ships. We ate at a small restaurant where the staff adopted Lachlan as one of their own.
Just next to the restaurant, in the middle of town, is the old Roman aquaduct which now serves as a nesting place for storks.
We stayed in a lovely pension just behind the museum and the Temple of Artemis. The temple is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In its day it must have been magnificent, but now only a couple of columns remain and you need to leave it to your imagination as to why it attained its status. Also in Selcuk is the Basilica of St John where the famous Christian disciple is supposedly buried. The basilica is on a small hill and has lovely views of the town and the fertile surroundings.
