UN Peacekeepers

From Sidon we drove another hour down to Tyre, about 30km from the Israel border. Again this is a lovely port city, but the presence of UNIFIL (United Nations) soldiers testifies to the recent history of the city.

The city has been bombed, invaded, occupied and generally suffered cruelly in the last 30 years at the hands of various parties including Israel and its proxy militias. There is a shortage of accommodation and a large number of aid workers. This means high prices for rooms, but it also means you can get a great cup of coffee!

Tyre has more wonderful Roman ruins, including the biggest surviving hippodrome in the Roman Empire.

We had a sunset stroll through the old Roman town which lead to the old harbour. The children were too tired to be impressed by their surroundings.
