The Dead Sea and the dead River Jordan.

Everyone who goes to Amman has to visit the Dead Sea. You go there, go for a float, and then leave. There is not much more to it than that, unless you enjoy litter and loud Arab music. For Elspeth and I, it was not very exciting, but the children loved it!

Just near the Dead Sea is the supposed site of the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.

The word river is rather an overstatement. It is a sludgy trickle and very uninspiring, having been damned further upstream and having had much of its water siphoned off for agriculture.

Across the river the Israeli flag flies, a reminder of their illegal occupation of the West Bank.
